Sophie is a careful writer, giving a lot of thought to the details in a story. Details make good writing great.. This story was inspired by a photograph of children hiding in an underground bunker in World War 2.
I can hear the footsteps growing closer. I am holding my breath. Although it is dark, I can see everyone’s fear: little Jess clinging to her doll, as if she holds tight enough everything will return to how it was. But I know things will never be like they were. She is now crying quietly. Billy is telling her harshly to quieten down. She is desperate to hold back the sobs but they just keep coming in little bursts. I know Billy thinks he is the leader and he’s trying to be strong but I can read it all over his face: behind the bossyness lies fear; fear that overwhelms any other emotion. The floor boards creak above our heads releasing small dust particles that fall gracefully until settling.
My face feels as if it is on fire yet my fingertips are as cold as death. My anxiety takes over. So many innocent stories at risk. I can’t believe they have discovered this place, yet, I can’t believe we had gone so long unnoticed. Time
passed slowly until the safe and naïve cloak of darkness was ripped from us as the floorboards are torn from their rusted nails. As all hope dissolves from my mind, the sharp rays of daylight sting my eyes.
I had been so long hiding in darkness. This underground refuge has been rudely awakened from its slumber.
