The Girl with Hair Like Sunlight
Rebecca Tyler
A girl with hair like sunlight skipped through an emerald field swinging her arms lightly beside her. A tiny smile played upon her lips, her eyes shone as if lit by a million stars and roses blossomed on her cheeks. She danced upon the springy grass, and sung with a voice so sweet that lyre birds listened enviously. She sung even as the last glimpse of sun began to sink below the horizon. When the light drained from the world she radiated with such beauty and innocence that the glory of her youth kept the field bright.
The clouds darkened above, hunching and stooping before the setting sun. Slowly they extended spidery tendrils of blackest night, seizing the peaceful light, and twisting it within its clutches. With a growl, it devoured the shining light. Satisfied rumbles echoed outwards after its prey had been ravaged. The darkness uncurled itself and stalked across the sky, growing in size and dominance over the world below. Beginning as a proud yet un-frightening tabby cat and evolving into a wild, savage lion. A mighty crack sounded and the sky appeared to split in two as a burst of bleached light shot from the cloud and struck the ground.
The girl with hair like sunlight looked up and for the first time her eyes shone with something other than happiness. Fear. Slowly, delicate water droplets began to fall upon her face, gradually increasing in size, intensity and fury. A never ceasing fire of water struck her and then ricocheted off. She flinched with each impact and stumbled forward blindly with her golden hair plastered to her neck.
Another bolt of white leapt from the expanse of darkness and seared the earth where it struck. Satisfied growls and rumbles resonated within the fog as it let all hell break loose on the ground below. Lightning and rain smacked the earth with such force that it quivered in both pain and terror. A fierce wind swept through the field whipping the soft tufts of grass to and fro like a rag doll.
The girl with hair like sunlight's teeth began to chatter and her lips faded to a motley blue. She wrapped her arms around herself, still stumbling forward hoping to find some protection from the storm. It cackled and roared enjoying her desperation and blew a fierce gale. She fell with a cry, her hair flicked across her face in soaked strands, clinging to her skin in fear. She turned her eyes to the sky as she gripped the grass with clenched hands. But her beauty and innocence allowed her to glow and shine even in the face of darkness. The darkness flinched at the power held within her and began to skulk away in its shameful retreat. Until next time, it rasped on the last whisper of its barren breath.
