Hunter Storytellers is a collection of short stories by secondary students of the Hunter region, NSW, Australia. Each writer has many other works in their portfolio. This site gives you a snippet of the talent of these wonderful writers.
Karen Crofts is the co-ordinator of this site. Karen is the Director of Hunter Writers Centre, Newcastle and a Creative Writing and English teacher.
Our creative writing workshops and courses help students enjoy writing, concentrating on powerful sentences, strong verbs and evocative nouns. Storytelling is all about engaging the reader or listener. We don't worry about punctuation, spelling or grammar until the editing process. What matters is telling the story first and foremost.
Creative writing involves fun but accurate work with words. To produce a great story, play or poem it needs to engage the reader/audience and the language needs to be for the story being told.
Good creative writing is accurate: using words that express what you really want to say.
Trying different styles of writing can help you appreciate texts. Have you ever tried writing a sonnet?
How to tell a story? Start with what you know and explore from there.
“The task of becoming literate cannot be reduced to the learning of a code.” (Vernon & Ferreiro, 1999, p. 415)

I liked writing different types of stories. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot about detailing a story.
I got great information from the program. I enjoyed learning how to construct a good short story.
I most enjoyed the 3 sentence short story exercise. The program was fun and educational.
I enjoyed learning about new ways of writing, to write from the heart and edit later. It was really helpful. I would like to do this again.
It forced me to write in ways I wouldn’t usually and I liked it.
